V.N. Bakul Institute for Superhard Materials of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (ISM)
The Institute has 400 employees. Institute is engaged in the development of processes for production and application of synthetic diamond, cubic boron nitride and other superhard materials, high-density high-tech ceramics, and cemented carbides. Institute deals also with manufacturing structural products and tools of the above materials.
Fundamental research: physicochemical processes of forming, growth and study the characteristics of mono- and polycrystalline, dispersed materials, diamond and diamond-like films in a wide range of temperatures and pressures; development of methods of spontaneous and directed regulated synthesis of superhard materials and methods of static, explosive and epitaxial synthesis. Priority-driven elaborations: large single crystals of synthetic diamonds; elite grinding powder and micropowders of synthetic diamonds and cubic boron nitride; polycrystalline and composite superhard materials based on diamond and cubic boron nitride; diamond and carbide tools for highly efficient metal-working, boring, stone working, coal output and geological survey; articles of ceramics; polishing pastes for high-precision optics; superprecision lathes for diamond turning and polishing; technologies of precise machining of metals, glass and ceramics.
Within the project, ISM will develop technologies of sintering of PCBN and PCD composites containing new types of binders at high pressures (up to 9 GPa) and temperatures (up to 2500 °C) with the use of “toroid”-type high-pressure apparatus.

CV of persons who will primarily be involved in the project

Prof. Volodymyr Z. Turkevych (male) graduated from Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1981 and since 1981 up to now he has worked at the Institute for Superhard Materials as a Junior, Senior and Leading Researcher, Head of a Department, Deputy Director of Science and Director of the Institute. He received his Dr. Sci. (Chem.) degree from the Shevchenko Kiev National University in 1996. He has a background in Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, Physics of Solids at the ISM and was a visiting professor in a number of Universities, including Paris, Lund, Bonn, Paderborn, Tsukubo, and JAERI, Spring-8, Harima. He was the superviser of 3 PhD students.Prof. V.Z. Turkevych is the author and co-author of a large number of papers on the above subjects. He headed the Ukrainian team in a number of international and Ukrainian projects.

Igor A. Petrusha (male) graduated from the Kharkov State University in 1970 and since 1972 up to now he has worked at the Institute for Superhard Materials as an Engineer, Researcher and Leading Researcher. He received his Dr. Sci. (Eng.) degree from the Bakul Institute for Superhard Materials, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2002. He has a background in high-pressure physics of solids; superhard materials science, cubic boron nitride, in particular; HP-HT phase transformations in boron nitride; production methods for cBN-base ceramic materials for metal cutting and polycrystalline highly heat-conductive materials to be used in electronics at the ISM and was a visiting researcher in the Universities of Bonn, Paderborn, and NIMS Tsukubo. Igor is the author and co-author of more than 100 publications, seven inventions and one foreign patent. He participated in implementation of a number of international and Ukrainian projects.
